Somalia is located in the eastern part of Africa.  When you speak of the horn of Africa, you cannot fail to mention Somalia. Somalia is a republic that is headed by a president who is democratically elected.  Somalia has experienced decades of political instability.  The first president of the country Mohamed Said Barre became a dictator, and the country had to remove him from power through a bloody civil war.  Decades of civil war continued that destroyed the economy and the infrastructure of the country.  There are still security threats in the country and especially from the Islamist terror group the Al Shabab which has caused terror attacks in the country and neighboring countries. In Somalia, most of the people are Cushites.  There are however other linguistic groups that live in the country but small numbers such as the Semites and some Bantus.  Somali and Arabic are the languages that are widely known.  Because the country is a Muslim country, they will get to speak Arabic. There are different dialects, but all these get to understand one another.  some of the Somalis also speak English and Swahili. They are Muslims.  Other religions contribute to 1% or less of the entire population.

 

The Somali people are farmers who are involved mostly with the rearing of livestock.   As a result of the leadership of the dictator president Mohamed Said Barre, there was the introduction of scientific socialism which led to the nationalization of industries, oil companies, banks other private companies. Other economic activities that take place are such as fishing, and crop farming.  Crop farming is however challenged by the harsh climatic conditions of the country. There is much that Somalia is capable of concerning development. The people and the country at large have been experiencing times of instability. It has had leaders who are self-centered.  The country has thus seen criminal groups that are formed to rule over themselves because of the instability that has been around.
